Scar Camouflage for Dark or Discolored Scars

Paramedical tattooing designed to soften the appearance of hyperpigmented scars

Scar camouflage is a specialized paramedical tattoo treatment that helps reduce the visual contrast of scars that appear darker than the surrounding skin.

At Monterey Med Ink, treatment focuses specifically on hyperpigmented scars — including scars that appear brown, purple, red, or pink.

Using advanced pigment techniques and careful color correction, the goal is to soften the appearance of discoloration so scars blend more naturally with the surrounding skin.

What Is Scar Camouflage Tattooing?

Scar camouflage is a paramedical tattoo technique that implants a special blend of pigment into scar tissue to improve color imbalance and make scars less noticeable.

Unlike decorative tattoos, scar camouflage focuses on restoring natural skin harmony rather than creating artwork.

Through strategic color blending and layering, paramedical tattooing can help soften the appearance of scars that stand out due to uneven pigmentation.

While scars cannot be completely erased, camouflage tattooing can significantly reduce their visual contrast and help them blend more naturally with the surrounding skin.

OUR SPECIALTY

Treating Hyperpigmented Scars

At Monterey Med Ink, scar camouflage treatments focus specifically on hyperpigmented scars, meaning scars that appear darker or more colorful than the surrounding skin.

These scars may appear:

• Brown
• Purple
• Red
• Pink

Hyperpigmentation can occur after surgery, injury, inflammation, or certain skin types during the healing process.

Scar camouflage aims to soften these color differences so the scar appears less noticeable over time.

Each treatment is carefully customized based on the scar’s tone, maturity, and surrounding skin color.

IMPORTANT CANDIDACY INFORMATION

Is Your Scar a Candidate for Camouflage?

Scar camouflage is not suitable for every scar. For the best results, scars should meet certain conditions before treatment can be considered.

Generally, ideal candidates have scars that are:

• fully healed (typically at least 6-12 months old)
• flat or mostly flat in texture
• stable in color
• darker in tone than the surrounding skin (such as brown, purple, red, or pink)

Scars that are still healing, raised, or lacking pigment may not be suitable for camouflage treatment.

A photo review is required to determine whether a scar is an appropriate candidate. All submitted photos are kept strictly confidential and used only for the purpose of evaluating treatment eligibility.

Submit photos to begin the consultation process.

THE PROCESS

Each scar is carefully evaluated to determine whether it is suitable for treatment.

Consultation

Photos or an in-person consultation are required to determine candidacy.

Treatment Planning

Once photos of the scar are reviewed and candidacy is determined, pricing will be provided. Your investment is based on the size of the scar and its location on the body, as these factors influence the time and approach required for treatment.

Tattoo Application

Our special pigment blend is designed to lighten and neutralize the discoloration within the scar. This controlled approach helps soften darker pigment in the scar so it blends more naturally with the surrounding skin once healed.

Healing and Follow-Up

Scars often require multiple sessions to achieve the best possible result. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to support optimal healing.

Understanding Scar Camouflage Results

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Scar camouflage does not remove a scar.

Instead, the treatment focuses on reducing color contrast so the scar blends more naturally with the surrounding skin.

Scar tissue can respond differently than normal skin, which is why treatments are approached carefully and results are evaluated as the skin heals.

Results depend on several factors, including:

• diet and hydration
• the age of the scar
• scar texture
• skin tone
• how the skin heals
• the location of the scar on the body
• the amount of trauma the skin has endured
• the level of hyperpigmentation present
• lifestyle factors such as alcohol consumption, smoking, and drug use

Because every scar and healing response is different, results can vary from person to person. The goal of scar camouflage is to soften the appearance of discoloration and improve how the scar blends with the surrounding skin.
