Learn about saline tattoo removal at Monterey Med Ink
How does it work?
The all natural and hypertonic solution is penetrated with a tattoo machine and works by the phase of Osmosis — where the body's natural saline or salt content is attracted to higher salt content. Lifting the ink to the surface of the skin and removed through the scabs.
Can saline removal work on any color of ink?
Yes, saline can lighten any color. However, due to their molecule size, some colors may take longer to lift to the skin’s surface. This makes saline removal effective for a wide range of tattoo colors.
How long will it take to heal?
Healing typically takes about eight weeks. During this time, you will go through itching and flaking phases. Your tattoo will begin to lighten in the later weeks. Healing times can vary depending on your body's natural process, lifestyle habits like drinking alcohol or smoking, and how well you follow aftercare instructions. If you are prone to hyperpigmentation, healing may take longer.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies for each individual. Factors include the tattoo size, the type of ink used, the number of times a specific area has been tattooed, the amount of saturation, the age of the tattoo, its location, and the depth of the ink. A minimum of three sessions is recommended to start but on average can take 7-10 sessions to see best results.
How long does a session take?
A saline tattoo removal session typically lasts approximately 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size and complexity of the tattoo being treated.
How much does it cost?
The cost of each tattoo removal session depends on the size and location of the tattoo. Monterey Med Ink charges between $150 - $400 per session. This pricing applies to removing and lighting permanent makeup or small body tattoos. If you need a payment plan, check out our option with Cherry to see if it's right for you.
Is the procedure painful?
The saline solution is applied using a tattoo machine and needles. Pain tolerance varies per individual. However, numbing agents can be applied for your comfort.
Saline vs. Laser Tattoo Removal
Laser removal uses intense light to break up pigment into tiny fragments. These fragments are pushed deeper into the body to be removed by the lymph and waste system. Saline removal, however, pushes pigment up and out through scabbing. Laser treatments are color-restricted and depth sensitive. This means more sessions may be required for multiple ink colors. Lasers are also more aggressive to the skin, causing more scar tissue damage. They can turn titanium (white) ink to a darker hue, like black or grey. Saline lightening is safer for eyebrow removal, as lasers can burn off existing hair permanently. Additionally, tattooing the skin after it has been lasered is often unsuccessful. In contrast, saline lightening does not harm the skin and can be tattooed once healed.
Can I get a new tattoo over the area that was removed?
Once the saline removal area has fully healed, you can get a new tattoo over the same spot. This typically takes about eight weeks but may vary based on individual healing.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are generally minimal with saline tattoo removal. You might experience redness, swelling, and scabbing, which are normal parts of the healing process. It's important to follow aftercare instructions to minimize any potential issues.
What should I do to prepare for a saline tattoo removal session?
Before your session, avoid alcohol and smoking, as these can affect healing. Make sure to stay hydrated and follow any specific instructions provided during your consultation. It’s also recommended to avoid sun exposure on the tattooed area.
Will I need to follow any special aftercare?
Aftercare is crucial for optimal results. This includes keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding sun exposure, and following specific aftercare instructions provided by your technician. Proper aftercare helps ensure the longevity and appearance of the camouflage.
